Student Funding

Leaping over the barrier

Education is not free in Belize. Students must purchase school uniforms, school supplies, textbooks and pay registration fees. Even government subsidized education for needy families has become severely politicized where a sizable minority of Belizean children do not even complete primary school. High school expenses can range from $500 to $1,000 annually, a financial barrier impacting many students living in poverty. WeBEA strives to provide funding for marginalized students enabling them to enroll and remain in school.

School Supplies

Power in a pencil

Impoverished students have limited access to basic school supplies, lacking even pencils and paper. At the high school level, students often are not equipped with the proper learning tools, such as geometric sets, composition booklets, and required textbooks. When students have access to fundamental learning resources, their opportunities for success greatly improve. WeBEA works to provide the necessary tools to encourage student learning and academic achievement.

Feeding Programs

Healthy bodies nurture healthy minds

Students need good nutrition to learn and develop. Some disadvantaged students start their school day hungry without food in their bellies. Others arrive to school with a flour or corn tortilla and little else. Primary school feeding programs provide a nutritious mid-day meal to undernourished students. WeBEA strives to support school feeding programs to insure that all students are not only intellectually fed but physically as well.

Reaching out for positive change

Respecting and finding value in cultural similarities and differences is an enriching experience. In the Toledo District, the most southern District, home to the indigenous Maya and the heart of much of our work, WeBEA is forming professional relationships. International partnerships of cross-cultural study with educators and student groups between the US and Belize create opportunities for learning and lasting positive change.

What people are saying about us

"I just want you to know I am doing good in school.  Thanks to you I am doing fine.  I try my best because I want a better life in the future and I want to help my mom because she struggles with us."
-Elvira, 1st Form High School Student

“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to WeBEA for the great assistance provided to the students of San Vicente. The parents and students were very happy and really appreciated the assistance especially those who have more than one child going to high school. Without your support many of them would have not gotten the opportunity to go to high school.”
-Ricardo Coc, Standard 6th grade Teacher
